A Damned Take on Women in Horror Films
The Guy’s Point of View!
In honor of Women in Horror Month 2017, I asked six male horror writers for their top-five favorite horror films staring strong leading ladies and why they loved them so much. While this particular pick is a TV series, it’s earned it’s place in the horror entertainment world. So, without further ado…
Day 24 – Jon Olson:
The X-Files (TV Series)
Leading Lady: Gillian Anderson
Two FBI agents, Fox Mulder the believer and Dana Scully the skeptic, investigate the strange and unexplained while hidden forces work to impede their efforts.
“For my final pick, I’m going to offer up one of my favorite television shows of all times, The X-Files. The show follows FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully (played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) as they investigate unexplained cases known as X-Files. Mulder is the believer while Scully is routed in science and reasonable explanations, which makes her the perfect skeptic. What helped this show is that creator Chris Carter resisted the network’s insistence that the female lead be portrayed by the stereotypical sexy actress to attract the most viewers possible. Instead, Carter cast Anderson (one of my first crushes) who helped make the character intelligent and more importantly, believable. We are able to feel that Scully is just as devoted to her beliefs as Mulder is to his. Her performance established Scully as one of television’s top leading ladies. The writers were also careful to not let Scully stray from her beliefs and devotion to finding a scientific/reasonable explanation. Even after she is ‘abducted by aliens’, she continues her own search for the truth while helping Mulder with their bizarre cases. Anderson is one of the reasons The X-Files was as successful as it was and why it remains one of the pivotal shows in television horror to this day.”
On top of working full time as a Security Checkpoint Coordinator at the Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport and still learning the ropes of being a father, Jon is also a writer of horror and dark fiction. While he writes predominantly about the dark and horrible, he will step out into other areas if the interest is there. He finds enjoyment in expressing his creativity through fiction, poetry, songwriting, painting and thrashing the crap out of his bass guitar.
