A Damned Take on Women in Horror Films
The Guy’s Point of View!

In honor of Women in Horror Month 2017, I asked six male horror writers for their top-five favorite horror films staring strong leading ladies and why they loved them so much. So, without further ado…

Day 21 – Mark Steinwachs:

Quarantine
Leading Lady: Jennifer Carpenter

Synopsis:

A television reporter and her cameraman are trapped inside a building quarantined by the CDC, after the outbreak of a mysterious virus which turns humans into bloodthirsty killers.

Mark’s opinion:

“Of the movies I’ve picked, this is the one that has the best chance of making you jump out of your seat. A reporter (played by Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman are on assignment to spend a night following firefighters in Los Angeles. They get called to an incident in an apartment building. While inside, the CDC arrives and barricades them in, killing anyone attempting to get out. Jennifer nails this role and feels real as a journalist. She isn’t always in total control, which is nice because it brings more realism to the film. The movie is shot from the perspective of the video camera they have with them which, when done well, is a trick that I like. Another note about this movie is there is no musical score, only sound effects, which is subtle but adds to the ominous vibe of the film.”
