A Damned Take on Women in Horror Films
The Guy’s Point of View!

In honor of Women in Horror Month 2017, I asked six male horror writers for their top-five favorite horror films staring strong leading ladies and why they loved them so much. So, without further ado…

Day 09 – Mark Steinwachs:

Bloog: The Last Vampire
Leading Lady: Jun Ji-hyun

A vampire named Saya, who is part of covert government agency that hunts and destroys demons in a post-WWII Japan, is inserted in a military school to discover which one of her classmates is a demon in disguise.

Mark’s opinion:

“This live action film based on the anime is about Saya (played by Jun Ji-hyun) who works for the U.S. Government hunting creatures called chiropterans. It is implied that Saya is a vampire, although never outright said. The setting is an air force base in the mid-‘60s on Halloween and Saya has been sent to find and dispatch the chiropterans there. Saya is a cold-blooded killer and is unapologetic for who or what she is. While this movie did not get the acclaim of the anime version, it is still a fun watch, and Jun Ji-hyun is the strength behind the film.”
