A Damned Take on Women in Horror Films
The Guy’s Point of View!
In honor of Women in Horror Month 2017, I asked six male horror writers for their top-five favorite horror films staring strong leading ladies and why they loved them so much. So, without further ado…
Day 05 – Hunter Shea:
Leading Lady: Sharni Vinson
When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of the victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.
“In this family dinner party gone mad, Erin, played by Sharni Vinson, is an unwitting victim of a plot by masked intruders to murder everyone in the house. It’s kind of like Assault on Precinct 13 on a residential scale. Erin may be a waif of a woman, but she’s no pushover. When everyone is losing their shit, she’s finding ways to first hide from the intruders, then fight back. When she realizes her boyfriend is behind it all, she mercilessly takes matters into her own hands. I literally almost stood up and cheered in the theater when she gave that bastard what was coming to him. Erin is the epitome of a badass.”
An additional note from Hunter:
You’ll find more strong women in horror films than any other genre. Hell, there are so many fine examples, they even have a name for them – Final Girls. Now, Final Girls come in all shapes and sizes, strengths and weaknesses. My picks for A Damned Take on Women in Horror Films are well deserved props to my favorite Final Girls…
