A Damned Take on Women in Horror Films
The Guy’s Point of View!
In honor of Women in Horror Month 2017, I asked six male horror writers for their top-five favorite horror films staring strong leading ladies and why they loved them so much. So, without further ado…
Day 04 – Brian Moreland:
Leading Lady: Jamie Lee Curtis
Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield to kill again.
“I’m a big Jamie Lee Curtis fan. She played several final girls in movies of the Seventies and Eighties, like The Fog, Prom Night and Terror Train. To me, Curtis’s most notable role was her portrayal of Laurie Strode in the Halloween movies. In the first1978 Halloween, Laurie Strode is a sweet-natured high school student who has to outfox an unkillable Michael Myers, a white-masked serial killer who goes around murdering all her friends. Not only does Laurie fight back with a knife and knitting needles, she risks her life to save two kids. She then takes on Michael Myers in a few sequels, getting tougher each time. Jamie Lee Curtis wrote the How-to-Survive-a-Slasher Handbook for many future final girls.”
Brian is an active member of the horror writer’s group Pen of the Damned.
