A Damned Take on Women in Horror Films
The Guy’s Point of View!
In honor of Women in Horror Month 2017, I asked six male horror writers for their top-five favorite horror films staring strong leading ladies and why they loved them so much. So, without further ado…
Day 03 – Mark Steinwachs:
Underworld
Leading Lady: Kate Beckinsale
Synopsis:
Selene, a vampire warrior, is entrenched in a conflict between vampires and werewolves, while falling in love with Michael, a human who is sought by werewolves for unknown reasons.
Mark’s opinion:
“As horror movies go, Underworld isn’t the scariest one ever. It’s a story about vampires versus werewolves with a twist about the two species’ bloodlines. While most of the vampire characters come off as annoying, two of them save the movie: Bill Nighy (as Viktor) and Kate Beckinsale (as Selene). Kate Beckinsale is far and away the star of the movie, and is badass in her role as a Death Dealer for the vampire coven. She flat out kicks the shit out of everything she comes across throughout the film. Selene goes rouge and unearths a conspiracy within the coven itself and the end of the movie sets up perfectly for a sequel.”
